Amish Heritage Colonial China Cabinet Top, 72 inch - SKU#2340
The original China Cabinet was first developed as a floor-standing display case for Queen Mary of England to house her fine china collection. It provided highly visible display and storage space behind it's glass doors, and was also fitted with glass sides to enhance Her Majesty's viewing pleasure. The British may well have exported this idea to their colonies, although the Early American China cabinets bear more resemblance to the Secretary Bookcase. Indeed, it seems that a creative early American housekeeper was inspired to display her best chinaware behind glass bookcase doors, just like her valuable book collection!
Unlike Queen Mary's floor standing display case, the Colonial China Cabinets are top cabinets, usually found seated upon a well-built Colonial Sideboard Cabinet (available separately), as shown at right. This particular 72 inch Amish Heritage Colonial China Cabinet Top features wooden side panels and Flat Top Doors. To further enhance Your viewing pleasure it may also be fitted with optional lighting and an optional mirrored back. Other variations of this same Colonial China Cabinet Top are available with Glass Paned Side Panels and / or Cathedral Arch Doors - (see inset) which add to the aura of refined gentility. |
