The Shaker Clothes Press (Wardrobe) has long been admired for it's simple elegance and excellent durability. In the late 1700's several religious communities of the Society of Believers in the Second Coming of Christ sprang up along the eastern seaboard of the US. Known as Shakers for their worship exercises, they have since become famous for the material results of their religious fervor.
Initially, Shaker furniture was made only for use within the Shaker community, but the simple beauty of these early Shaker pieces soon became broadly recognized, and publicly available. The outstanding characteristics of Shaker-inspired furniture are mostly straight lines, right angles, the occasional gentle arch, and a simple elegance in absence of intricate ornamentation.
