Amish Heritage Victorian Floor Standing Cheval Mirror, 29 inch Wide - SKU#8160
The Cheval Mirror or 'Cheval Glass' is always a tall but narrow floor-standing mirror, that can usually be tilted by means of swivels, supported between 2 side pillars. Initially used by the gentility for dressing, the Cheval Mirror became popular in the late 1700's, but it's widespread use later diminished as wardrobes fitted with mirror doors became available.
"Horse" was an adjective in early America which referred to something coarse or bigger than the norm in its genre (ex. "horse chestnut, horse radish), and large, floor-standing mirrors were first called "horse" mirrors. At some point, furniture designers thought this designation too unrefined, and chose to use the French term, "cheval" in place of the English "horse". Another explanation is that the original Cheval Mirrors featured height adjustment using lead counterweights and a 'horse', or pulley, from which the name was taken.
