Amish Heritage Colonial Thumb Back Windsor Side Chair - SKU#3710
Windsor Chairs represent a high point in the landscape of furniture design & construction. The original English Windsor Chair has traveled extensively throughout the centuries, first coming to America in about 1726. Since then, several stylistic and structural adaptations have evolved including Arrow-Back, Bow-Back, Comb-Back, Fan-Back, Paddle-Back, Sack-Back, Wheat-Back, and many other Windsor Chair varieties. The original Thumb-Back Windsor chair developed circa 1820, and is often referred to as a "Pierced Slat-Back Windsor".
This Amish Heritage Thumb-Back Windsor Side Chair is typical of the American Windsor chairs of the early nineteenth century. At this time, Americans were fascinated by things oriental, thus the popularity of the "bamboo-style" turnings. Though it appears very delicate, this light and extremely graceful chair is in fact very sturdy. By using 100% premium American hardwood components combined with modern glues and a range of quality finishes (see thumbnails above) it actually surpasses the beauty and durability of the original thumb-back chair.
Characterized by bamboo-style turnings, a comfortable dished seat, and legs that are driven deeply into the seat for maximum stability and durability. Comfortable back support is ensured by the use of 8 ergonomically arched back spindles.
