The Dutch Cupboard is a closed upper cupboard with open space beneath, allowing access to the top of it's supporting cabinet. The original Dutch Cupboards were popular among the "Dutch" or German occupants of Colonial Pennsylvania and Maryland, and many early prototypes had a very small open area - which raises a question as to its original purpose.
