Queen Anne Style: The English took an originally Dutch furniture style, adapted it, and the short-reigning British Queen Anne (r.1702-1714) gave her name to the resulting furniture style. From England the Queen Anne Style crossed the Atlantic to her New World Colonies, where it underwent further transformation. Queen Anne Style prevailed in the English Colonies from about 1720 until well into the Chippendale era which began in the mid-1750's. Typical elements of Queen Anne style include cabriole legs, repeated use of the "cyma" curve, and a gracefulness of construction which stood in contrast to the blockier furniture of the preceding William and Mary style.

The design originally developed to allow one to open the lower drawers without having to bend over. It was also popular with one's staff, as it allowed them to clean under it with ease.
