Mission-Style Furniture originated with the European "Arts & Crafts" movement of the late 1880's, and was popularized in America in the early years of the twentieth century by the craftsman, Gustav Stickley. The Mission style is characterized by a pragmatic approach that endeavors to emphasize the natural beauty of the wood - using straight lines, right angles, rectangular shapes, and graceful arches, with additional ornamentation derived only from construction elements such as joints and pegs.

"Horse" was an adjective in early America which referred to something coarse or bigger than the norm in its genre (ex. "horse chestnut, horse radish), and large, floor-standing mirrors were first called "horse" mirrors. At some point, furniture designers thought this designation too unrefined, and chose to use the French term, "cheval" in place of the English "horse". Another explanation is that the original Cheval Mirrors featured height adjustment using lead counterweights and a 'horse', or pulley, from which the name was taken.

This most handsome Amish Heritage Mission Cheval Mirror is the perfect match for our range of Mission Beds and Cabinets. It accurately reflects genuine Mission styling, with it's straight lines and slatted stand. By using 100% premium American hardwood components, combined with modern glues and a range of quality finishes (see thumbnails above), it actually surpasses the beauty and durability of the original Mission Cheval Mirror that it is modeled upon.

Traditional Mission elegance bequeaths this mirror a timeless appeal, making it as popular to day as it ever was.
