Amish Heritage Hanging or Standing Shaker Mirror, 39 inch Wide - SKU#8040
Shaker Furniture has long been admired for it's simple elegance and excellent durability. In the late 1700's several religious communities of the Society of Believers in the Second Coming of Christ sprang up along the eastern seaboard of the US. Known as Shakers for their worship exercises, they have since become famous for the material results of their religious fervor. Initially, their furniture was made only for use within their own communities, but the simple beauty of these early Shaker pieces soon became broadly recognized, and publicly available. The outstanding characteristics of Shaker-inspired furniture are mostly straight lines, right angles, the occasional gentle arch, and a simple elegance in absence of intricate ornamentation.
"Horse" was an adjective in early America which referred to something coarse or bigger than the norm in its genre (ex. "horse chestnut, horse radish), and large, floor-standing mirrors were first called "horse" mirrors. At some point, furniture designers thought this designation too unrefined, and chose to use the French term, "cheval" in place of the English "horse". Another explanation is that the original Cheval Mirrors featured height adjustment using lead counterweights and a 'horse', or pulley, from which the name was taken.
